Woodsman Company, a division of Spear Head Excavation

A full service lot clearing, land management, and tree removal company.

Our Approach

The Woodsman Co. mission is to provide sustainable tree service for those needing to clear house lots, manage forested areas, or harvest the wood on their property. Responsible harvesting means putting to use the wood that we cut. In most cases real, usable materials can be made of the wood on your own property. Woodsman Co. is here to help you turn standing lumber into useful products.

Our services include: cutting, chipping, firewood processing, stump removal, and forestry mulching.

As an excavation contractor I talk to a lot of customers in the early stages of planning their construction projects. One of the questions that inevitably comes up is, what do we do with all the wood? Cutting a driveway or a house lot can produce a lot of timber, but not necessarily enough to have a lumber company come and take the wood for product. The very common question from nearly every customer is, “Can we use this wood somehow in our own construction process?” The answer is, yes, and Woodsman Co. is my attempt to serve the customer that wants the wood they cut to be put to good use.

This customer needed more backyard space. We took down six large hardwoods, chipped all the brush, removed and disposed of the stumps, then leveled the backyard and finished with topsoil. The end result produced a large pile of wood chips for them to use on gardening and landscape projects, several cords of firewood. It was all harvested and put to use from their own property, for their own property! Of course they also had a more spacious and sunny backyard.

On this project, we worked with A Cut Above Tree Service, Inc. to take down a dangerous, large tree. You can find out more about them here at

This was a septic system installed on Westport Island, by Spear Head Excavation. You can find out more about septic systems here,

Septic Installation.

Included in the scope of the project was clearing the area of trees. This produced usable wood for milling, firewood, and wood chips. The wood chips were used onsite as ground cover and erosion control for the remainder of the project.

Pictured here is another example of using the natural product found onsite. This was done in Richmond, ME. Wood chips on this job were made of the existing trees, and brush piles. They were later used as ground cover and erosion control over the septic system and on the steep hill.

Included in these pictures are also the drainage swale lined with river stone and a stone retaining wall that was also done using stone found onsite.
